FAQs
Answers to some frequently asked questions
Q: How is porcelain different from other ceramics?
A: The porcelain we use is of the highest quality available. Unlike traditional clay bodies such as stoneware that are porous after firing and require a glaze, porcelain contains materials that fuse together at very high heat, making them non-porous. There is no need for glazing - in this way the porcelain we use is very similar to glass.
Q: How do you create saturated colors without a glaze?
A: We mix a pigment stain into the liquid porcelain slip. A chemical reaction occurs during the high-temperature firings, amplifying the color.
Q: Why does porcelain cost more than traditional ceramics?
A: Porcelain requires a tedious and complex production process.
- Unglazed porcelain must be near perfect, any flaws cannot be concealed with glaze.
- Each piece of porcelain takes a minimum of 1 week to make.
- Not only is the material more expensive than other clay formulas, but most importantly it requires a level of skill and craftsmanship that only comes with experience. If every step of the process isn’t executed perfectly, you will end up with a defective item.
